What is ANPR?
ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition, it basically automatically detects plate numbers and records them for security purposes. It could also take a picture of the driver, depending on the type of ANPR used.
How does ANPR camera work?
It works by making the entryway and roads safe for everyone. This more than adequate system detects and reads the plate numbers of vehicles that are entering the premises and records them. ANPR can either grant entry to pre-authorised vehicles or scan new plates, it entirely depends on where it’s being deployed, for example, a car park can scan for new vehicles entry, whereas a private company’s building may only let pre-authorised vehicles in.
What does ANPR check for?
ANPR system uses optical character recognition to read a vehicle’s registration number, It can scan the plates and check or store them in a database. ANPR can allow vehicles to access the compound if they are pre-authorised or pre-paid and are in the system.
Is ANPR legal?
Yes, ANPR is legal in Malaysia but it depends on the country they are being applied in. They are often used in law enforcement and parking lots.
Is ANPR the same as LPR?
There’s no big difference between the two, it is just a term to describe the hardware and software used. LPR is described to be a specially made CCTV camera that is capable of capturing license plates despite the challenges associated with them such as car speed, fog, night vision and reflective license plates. ANPR is used to describe the software that takes input LPR cameras which can be used to recognise plate numbers and match up with database records.
